Exposed beams and a frescoed coffered ceiling all help to impress anyone entering this Renaissance palace, located in a hidden alley in the centre of Verona. Conversely, the contemporary design of the plates, furnishings and fittings really make you feel like you are in a house-museum. A home even before a restaurant: this is indeed one of the most beautiful stories about catering families. Recently, Elia handed over the reins of the kitchen to his son, Matteo Rizzo, who still seeks advice and tips from his father, although he manages to define his own creative style in the dishes. The restaurant is elegant without being glitzy, imaginative without straying too far from tradition. It’s a real must to stop over at Il Desco to enjoy a fine selection of Venetian cuisine: creamy, salt-cured cod, roast peppers and cream of anchovies, potato dumplings with sauce of pigeon, Parmesan cream and mint, Thyme-glazed sweetbreads, scalded chard, sea snails and bottarga, spicy Tiramisu.
