A sacred temple in honour of wine and good food, La Ciau del Tornavento is a must for anyone who travels from the rolling hills of the Langhe and arrives in Treiso. The austere, former kindergarten with its Fascist style exterior and the radiant, indoor terrace with views over the vineyards of Nebbiolo and towards a part of the snowy Alps, whisper in unison about a secret wine cellar that houses the very best of Italy’s finest wines.
Located alongside a cool water stream and dug directly into the tuff stone, this wine cellar, which Maurilio Garola considers to be all but sacred, preserves not only the classic wines from Piedmont but also those of our cousins from across the Alps, representing a highly enviable selection of wines, plus a vast artisan production of cheeses and cold meats.
The best time to arrive at La Ciau del Tornavento is truffle time, when this delicacy accompanies raw meat minced by knife, egg in the pot, tagliolini with butter, veal tournedos (fillet steaks) and cardoons from Nizza Monferrato.
