Tesimo is a true Dolomites village with about 1200 inhabitants between Bolzano and Merano, renowned for its culinary prowess and well worth making a detour to, especially for the Zum Löwen restaurant. Anna Matscher and her husband Alois have been its hosts since they took over the old family farm and fully renovated it to enhance its imposing structure. Wood, stone and steel form the backbone of the location, protected by the lion that stands proud on the sign, resounding the name of the restaurant. In this cuisine with broad horizons, that is clear-cut and no-frills, one can savour the quiet strength of Mediterranean style cuisine with an intense range of rigorous compositions revealing the pleasure of taste. In a moment, one can be catapulted from the intensity of Alpine produce to sea-born flavours and the crunchy freshness of home-grown vegetables. “Where my raw materials come from is really important for me. My kitchen is the place where I can let my creative spirit run free. Cooking is my way of expressing my joy of living.” These are Anna’s words on her culinary philosophy. Her husband Alois, as maître, and her daughter Elisabeth, as sommelier, are the hospitality professionals who complete the family team running this small, but sparklingly lively Gasthaus.
