12 Apostoli

Mario Buffo

On a tiny street in what Shakespeare would have called “Bella Verona” (“fair Verona”), on the other side of a doorway that recalls the inns of long ago, lies the wonder that is the 12 Apostoli restaurant. A truly historic place, domain of the Gioco family since 1921. First there was Antonio, along with his wife Rosella. Then came Giorgio, considered a pioneer of the post-war restaurant business in Italy, along with his wife Jole. Now it’s Mauro Buffo’s turn. He’s world famous, and trained under the Master himself, Gualtiero Marchesi. “The concept of taking things apart comes from Mauro. Buffo puts them back together again,” says the chef without beating around the bush. Then he presses the tradition button, adding innovation and this moment’s spice. Italian surf and turf delights the palate. Surprising tastes and colors collide and combine. The avant-garde wine cellar amazes thanks to sommelier Luciano Palmieri’s perfect choices and constant updating. Writers, actors, musicians, sculptors, painters, politicians – they’ve all dined beneath the frescoes by Pino Casarini, one of the 20th-century’s greats, that adorn the restaurant’s rooms. Heart, soul and taste. You’re there.
