Il Cigno Trattoria dei Martini

Gaetano Martini and Alessandra Martini

Mantova is a fascinating city brimming with history, boasting a perfectly preserved downtown area where the aura of its ancient rulers, the Gonzagas, still seems to haunt the streets. Inside one of the 16th-century aristocratic homes, Tano and Alessandra welcome guests to a locale that retains centuries-old charm and warmth. Il Cigno Trattoria dei Martini is just the kind of restaurant to head for when you’re feeling the pangs of nostalgia and are in need of certainty and comfort. Here you’re sure to be on the receiving end of masterful but never excessive attention when it comes to service, and cuisine that stirs up that home feeling you seek, with each dish perfectly executed. An excellent choice for Sunday lunch. When the Martinis opened their trattoria in 1969, they sought to create a place that was different from the local osterias – where the watchword would be genuineness, in the name of a less structured simplicity. Of course, that meant – and still means – offerings from the grand Mantuan meat-and-fish traditions, made with ingredients of the highest quality. Try eel in carpione, pike in sauce. The pumpkin tortelli are probably among the Po Valley’s best. The capon-breast salad in sweet-and-sour sauce is another big hit. A delightful fine food experience that immerses you in the gastronomic and cultural history of Mantova.
